Terms of service

The service in plain words
NumberBurn rents receive-only US phone numbers that you hand out and throw away. Calls to one of your numbers ring one verified mobile phone that belongs to you. Texts to the number appear in a web inbox. You cannot reply to a text from the inbox.
- Receive only. A number cannot place calls or send texts. There is no outbound calling and no outbound texting.
- One forwarding mobile. Calls go to the one mobile you verified. Texts land in the web inbox.
- US only. Numbers are US numbers.
- Some sites refuse virtual numbers. A bank, an app or a website can decide not to accept a number like this. Check the site's own rules before you rely on a number.
No 911
A NumberBurn number cannot place any call, so it cannot call 911 or any other emergency number. Do not use a NumberBurn number for anything that depends on reaching emergency services. In an emergency, use your own phone and its own carrier.
Accounts and verification
- You get one trial per person.
- You may have one account per person, and one account per forwarding mobile.
- You verify your forwarding mobile before calls are forwarded to it.
- We store the line type of your forwarding mobile when you verify it. See the privacy policy.
Trial and billing
The trial lasts 7 days and costs $1, charged when you add your card at checkout. During the trial you can hold 1 number and use up to 100 forwarded minutes in total, whichever plan you chose. The full plan allowance starts with your first payment.
| Item | Trial | Basic | Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $1 for 7 days | $9.99 per month | $29.99 per month |
| Numbers included | 1 | 5 | 100 |
| Forwarded minutes | 100 for the whole trial | 100 per month | 1,000 per month |
| Extra minute | Not available beyond the trial minutes | 5 cents each | 5 cents each |
| Overage cap per month | None | $50 | $100 |
| Extra number | Not available | $1 per month | $0.50 per month |
- How minutes are counted. Only answered forwarded calls count. Each call is rounded up to whole minutes, so 65 seconds is 2 minutes. An unanswered call is 0 minutes. Voicemail picked up by your own carrier counts, because the call connected.
- Overage. Minutes beyond your plan cost 5 cents each on Basic and 5 cents each on Pro, capped at $50 and $100 a month. At the cap, forwarding pauses and texts keep arriving.
- Usage emails. We may email the account when 80 percent of the included minutes are used, and again when overage starts.
- Extra numbers. Each number beyond your plan's included numbers costs $1 a month on Basic and $0.50 on Pro, prorated by the share of the billing period left.
- Burn charges. After the trial, 1 burn per UTC calendar month is free. Each further burn that month adds a one-time $1 charge to your next bill. The burn screen shows the charge before you confirm. The trial has no extra burns.
- Renewal and cancelling. When the trial ends, your card is charged for the first month and the plan renews every month until you cancel. Cancel any time with the ready-made cancel email on the Billing page; no reason is needed. Your plan runs to the end of the paid month. When a cancellation ends, or after repeated payment failure, all of your numbers are burned into quarantine.
- Refunds. Your first paid month can be refunded if you ask within 7 days of paying it; the $1 trial is not a paid month. Other charges are not refunded in part.
Burning, quarantine and retention
Burning a number is permanent. Forwarding stops at once, and the texts already received stay visible to you until their retention ends. The number is then held in quarantine for 30 days before it goes back to the carrier pool. The privacy policy lists what is stored.
Fair use for texts
Texts are not billed per message. As fair use, each number may receive up to 500 texts per calendar month. We may limit a number that goes beyond that. Pictures and other media up to 5 MB are stored; larger media is recorded in the inbox as "could not store".
Number recycling
After quarantine a number returns to the carrier pool and can be given to someone else. A number you rent may have belonged to someone before you, so texts meant for a previous holder can still arrive.
Abuse and what we may do
We may suspend or close an account and take back its numbers for the reasons in the acceptable use policy: fraud, ban evasion, harassment, illegal use, evading legal identity requirements, collecting verification codes at volume, reselling numbers, and automated account creation.
Availability and changes
Limits and these terms may change, and a change states its effective date. We do not promise any level of uptime or delivery.
