# Resume phone number

Put a NumberBurn number on your resume so recruiters and employers can call without getting your real number. Calls ring your mobile while forwarding is on.

A resume goes to many people you never meet. Put a NumberBurn number on it, so calls reach your mobile while your real number stays off the page.

## Why a burner number here

A resume is passed around, uploaded and stored, often for years. A number that you can switch to texts only or burn gives you a way to stop the calls without changing your real number.

- **Keep your real number private.** Recruiters, job boards and anyone who stores the resume have the NumberBurn number, not yours.
- **Stop calls and texts after you are done.** Switch the number to texts only so calls stop, or burn it. Either way you keep control of who can still reach your real phone.
- **See who sold your number.** Each number carries a label, and the dashboard shows how many calls it took in the last 30 days. If a number you gave one place starts ringing from strangers, you can tell where it leaked.

## How to set it up

1. **Pick an area code.** Choose one of the supported US area codes and NumberBurn finds a number in it. A number in the area code of the city you are applying to can look local.
2. **Verify your mobile.** From your real mobile, text `START` and the 4-digit code shown on screen to the new number. The code works for 30 minutes. Calls to your NumberBurn numbers ring this one confirmed mobile.
3. **Label the number.** Name the number after the search, for example the role or the season of your job hunt. Labels are only visible to you.
4. **Hand it out.** Put the number in the header of your resume and on applications. Keep your real number off the page.
5. **Watch the inbox.** Texts appear in the web inbox, tagged with the number that received them. There is no app. Calls ring your mobile while the number is on Forward. Read recruiter texts there. Employers may call, and a call rings your mobile while forwarding is on. You decide when to move to texts only.
6. **Burn it when done.** One tap. Forwarding stops at once, the message history stays visible to you, and the number is held out of circulation for 30 days before it goes back to the carrier pool. Burning is permanent. Switching to texts only is the gentler option if you might still want the messages to keep arriving.

## What to know first

- **Receive-only.** You cannot call or text from a NumberBurn number. It only receives.
- **No 911.** A NumberBurn number cannot place any call, emergency calls included. Use your own phone.
- **US numbers only.**
- Employers may call. While the number is on Forward, those calls ring your mobile, so keep your phone ready for unknown numbers.
- You cannot call or text from the number. To call an employer back you will use your own phone, which shows your own number.
- Some sites and apps refuse virtual numbers. Check the rules of the site you plan to use before you rely on a NumberBurn number there.

> **Switching to texts only:** You decide when to turn calls off. Switching the number to texts only stops calls from ringing your phone, but an employer who tries to call will then not reach you. Do it when your search is over, not in the middle of it.

## Questions

### Will an employer who calls reach me?

Yes, while the number is on Forward: calls to it ring your confirmed mobile. If you switch it to texts only or block it, calls stop, so leave it on Forward while you are job hunting.

### Can I call an employer back from the NumberBurn number?

No. NumberBurn is receive-only and cannot place calls. You would call back from your own phone, and the employer would see your own number.

### What happens to the number when I get a job?

Burn it. Forwarding stops at once, your messages stay visible to you, and the number is held 30 days before it returns to the carrier pool.
